Updated June 08,2025
House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed hope Sunday that President Donald Trump and Elon Musk can mend their relationship after a recent public dispute. The clash stemmed from MuskS criticism of the GOP’s multitrillion-dollar spending bill, which he blasted as a “disgusting abomination.”
Johnson, R-La., speaking on ABC News’ “This Week,” emphasized the importance of unity. “There’s a lot of emotion involved in it, but it’s in the interest of the country for everybody to work together,” Johnson saeid. He added that he has not spoken with Musk as last Monday regarding the “big, lovely bill.”
The spending bill, now under Senate consideration, ignited a feud between Trump and Musk, previously a major donor to Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated Sunday that Trump has no intention of speaking with Musk. Trump himself told NBC News he wasn’t interested in repairing the relationship.
Musk, CEO of Tesla, threatened to “fire all politicians who betrayed the American people” amid his criticisms. Trump responded by warning Musk of “very serious consequences” if he supports Democratic candidates challenging Republicans who back the bill. Johnson echoed Trump’s sentiment, calling it a “big mistake” if Musk were to back Democrats.
“I didn’t go out to craft a piece of legislation to please the richest man in the world, what we’re trying to do is help hardworking Americans,” Johnson said.
