Jony Ive’s AI Partnership: From Apple to OpenAI
Updated May 25, 2025
Jony Ive, the designer behind Apple’s most iconic products, is embarking on a new venture in artificial intelligence through a partnership with OpenAI. This move follows OpenAI’s acquisition of io, Ive’s AI-focused startup, for $6.5 billion.
Ive’s journey at Apple began in 1992, but he considered leaving before Steve Jobs’ return as CEO in 1997. He felt the company prioritized profits over product excellence under then-CEO Gil Amelio. Jobs’ emphasis on creating “great products” convinced Ive to remain, according to Walter Isaacson’s biography, Steve Jobs.
The bond between Jobs and Ive was strong. Laurene Powell jobs told Isaacson that Ive was irreplaceable in Steve’s life. Jobs admired Ive’s attention to detail and understanding of Apple as a product company.
After Jobs’ death, Ive stayed at Apple for nearly a decade before leaving in 2019 to establish LoveFrom. Two years ago, LoveFrom began collaborating with OpenAI. Now, with the acquisition of io, ive is poised to shape the future of AI devices.
Sam Altman praised a prototype device from Ive’s team, calling it “the coolest piece that the world will have ever seen.” Ive’s LoveFrom will take on significant design responsibilities at OpenAI, though his exact role remains unspecified.
“We discussed approaches to forms and materials. We were on the same wavelength. I suddenly understood why I loved the company,” Jony ive,Designer said.
What’s next
Ive’s team is already developing an AI gadget, and further details about his role at OpenAI are expected to emerge as the partnership progresses.
