Josh Klinghoffer Plea Deal: Fatal Crash Details
Josh Klinghoffer Accepts Plea Deal in Vehicular Manslaughter Case
Updated June 1, 2025
Former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, 45, has accepted a plea deal, resolving a vehicular manslaughter charge stemming from a 2024 incident. The incident involved the death of Israel Sanchez, 47, in Alhambra, CA.
Klinghoffer, driving a GMC Yukon, made a left turn at the intersection of West Main Street and South Meridian Avenue, striking Sanchez, who was in a marked crosswalk. The incident led to Sanchez’s death and subsequent legal action.
In court Wednesday, Klinghoffer pleaded no contest to misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence. The sentence includes 60 days of community labor, one year of informal probation, a driver safety course, and restitution payments.
The prosecutor warned Klinghoffer during the hearing about the potential for future murder charges if distracted driving leads to another fatality.
Sanchez’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit, alleging Klinghoffer was using his phone at the time of the collision. The suit claimed Klinghoffer showed no signs of braking before impact, suggesting distracted driving and a ”willful disregard” for safety.
Following the incident, Klinghoffer’s civil attorney, Andrew Brettler, stated that Klinghoffer instantly stopped, called 911, and cooperated with authorities, calling it a “tragic accident.”
Klinghoffer was a guitarist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers from 2009 to 2019 and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with the band in 2012. He has also performed with Jane’s Addiction and pearl Jam.
What’s next
Klinghoffer will begin his community service and probation. The civil suit filed by the Sanchez family remains ongoing.
