“Joy: Christmas with The Tabernacle Choir” Premieres on BYUtv and PBS

SALT LAKE CITY, Nov. 21, 2024 – This holiday season, PBS and BYUtv will air a special program, “Joy: Christmas with The Tabernacle Choir.” The 90-minute show features Broadway star Michael Maliakel and actress Lesley Nicol. This event marks the 21st televised year of this cherished Christmas tradition, which has been a top-rated performance on PBS during the holidays for 19 years.

The premiere is scheduled for Dec. 17 at 8 p.m. ET, with a repeat showing on Dec. 24 at 9:30 p.m. ET. It will stream online from Nov. 28 to Jan. 1. BYUtv will also air it on Dec. 19 at 9 p.m. ET.

The program combines uplifting music performed by Maliakel, the Tabernacle Choir, and the Orchestra at Temple Square. Lesley Nicol narrates stories highlighting the spirit of Christmas. This year, she shares a tale about Victor Hugo‘s kindness towards impoverished children.

Maliakel expressed his excitement about performing alongside the choir, emphasizing the sense of community and service in their music. Nicol observed the teamwork among the cast and crew, noting the collective commitment to creating a memorable experience for viewers.

The program was filmed in December 2023 in front of live audiences at Salt Lake City’s Conference Center. A total of 500 performers participated, including the choir and the Gabriel Trumpet Ensemble.

Mack Wilberg, the music director, praised both Maliakel and Nicol for their enthusiasm and impact. He highlighted the joy they brought to the performance and the commitment to sharing a message of kindness through music.

Michael Maliakel, recognized for his Broadway role in “Aladdin,” has participated in various PBS concert specials. Lesley Nicol is known for her portrayal of Mrs. Patmore in “Downton Abbey” and has an extensive career in theater and television.

The annual broadcast has previously featured many stars, including Audra McDonald, Kristin Chenoweth, and Angela Lansbury.
