Kerala Rains | Rains likely in Kerala for next five days; Yellow alert in various districts

Thiruvananthapuram: The Central Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rains in the next five days in the state. Yellow alert has been declared in various districts.

Vigilance has been ordered from Thiruvananthapuram to Palakkad. The Met Office has warned fishermen to be careful.

Two shutters of Mullaperiyar closed; The water level is 141.50 feet

Idukki: Two shutters of the open Mullaperiyar dam have been closed due to high water level. Now the five shutters are open 30 cm apart. The current water level in the Mullaperiyar Dam is 141.50 feet.

The seven shutters of the Mullaperiyar Dam in Tamil Nadu were opened last night after the water level rose sharply due to heavy rains. Of the seven shutters, three are elevated by sixty and four by thirty centimeters.

The water level in the Periyar River rose by more than two feet as 3949 cubic feet per second of water flowed into the Periyar. The shutters were opened without adequate warning and the coastal residents were alarmed.

Those on the banks of the Periyar have been warned to be vigilant. The shutters remain open as it continues to rain in the catchment area. 4,000 cubic feet of water is now flowing out. In Mullaperiyar, three shutters are 60 cm wide and four shutters are 30 cm wide.

The shutters of Mullaperiyar, Aliyar and Nedumkandam Kallar Dam in Idukki have been opened due to the rising water level. The water level in Idukki dam reached 2400.10 feet. The Parambikulam-Aliyar sub-divisional deputy director said that 11 shutters have been raised by 21 cm each in the Aliyar dam. The two shutters of Idukki Nedumkandam Kallar Dam have been raised by 10 cm each.

The water level in Periyar is likely to rise up to 75 cm. Residents on both sides of the Periyar River should be vigilant in this situation, the collector said.
