Khartoum Ablaze: Army and Rapid Support Forces Clash in Fierce New Battles
Fighting Resumes in Sudanese Capital, Khartoum
Fighting has resumed between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the capital city of Khartoum, following a period of relative calm in recent weeks.
Violent clashes broke out in the vicinity of the Hattab military base in Khartoum Bahri, one of the main cities in the capital’s triangle, which includes Khartoum, Omdurman, and Khartoum Bahri. Eyewitnesses reported a clash with heavy and light weapons between the two sides near the army camp.
Residents of the areas surrounding the camp explained that the RSF launched a surprise attack on the camp early on Monday morning, approaching from multiple directions. Media platforms linked to the military reported that their forces repelled the RSF attack on the military base, forcing them to retreat.
Dead and Captured
Video clips published by pages linked to the RSF on social media confirmed that they had entered the Hattab camp and taken control of it. The recordings showed that the RSF, after encountering significant resistance from the army forces, killed and captured a number of them.
The conflict was preceded by reports that the RSF was mobilizing a large number of fighters in the eastern regions of the Nile to attack the camp where the army forces were heavily stationed.
Omdurman Conflict
In the city of Omdurman, intermittent clashes and continuous qualitative operations by both sides have been reported in residential neighborhoods. The RSF controls most of the cities of Khartoum and Khartoum Bahri, while the army maintains control over large areas of the city of Omdurman.
Aerial Bombardment
Army warplanes have launched intensive raids on several areas of the country, targeting areas under the control of the RSF. The cities of El Fasher and Mellit in North Darfur state have been among the most affected. Social media reports, photos, and video clips have highlighted the losses caused to the city of Mellit, which is completely controlled by the RSF.
Citizens who spoke to Asharq Al-Awsat reported that there were no RSF forces in the areas targeted by the army planes. Instead, the aerial bombardment resulted in a number of deaths and serious injuries among civilians, as well as the destruction of many homes and shops.
Coordinated Attacks
For weeks, the Army Air Force has intensified its launch of coordinated and simultaneous attacks on the states of Darfur in the west of the country, and Al-Jazira and Sinnar in the center, which are states controlled mainly by the RSF.
The Rapid Aid Forces have reported that in the last two weeks, Sudanese army aircraft carried out 27 air sorties over different areas in the various states of the country, resulting in the death of more than 200 civilians and serious damage to infrastructure, including hospitals, markets, water stations, and citizens’ homes.
