Kieran Foran has made an immediate impact as interim coach of the Manly Sea Eagles, leading the team to a dominant 52-18 victory over the Dolphins on Thursday night. The win came less than a week after Foran unexpectedly stepped into the role following the sacking of Anthony Seibold, a move that stunned many within the NRL.
Foran, who retired at the end of last season after a stint as an assistant coach with the Gold Coast Titans, admitted to feeling nervous leading up to the match but expressed confidence in his team’s ability to deliver. “I was nervous,” Foran said in a post-game press conference. “Throughout the day, I was going for walks around Brisbane – I couldn’t sit still.”
The Sea Eagles’ performance was a stark contrast to their recent form, with Haumole Olakau’atu delivering a standout performance. The team’s comprehensive victory suggests a potential turning point for Manly, who have struggled to find consistency this season. Foran believes the team was capable of such a performance, stating, “I felt like that performance was coming, we’ve shown glimpses of that and we’ve been really good in patches.”
The appointment of Foran was a surprise to many, including the former coach himself. According to reports, Seibold was unaware of the impending decision. Foran revealed he was “shocked” by the call from Manly chairman Scott Penn and club official Jason King late Wednesday night, but felt compelled to accept the challenge. “Late last night, I received a call from Scott and Jason and at the end of the day it’s not in my nature to say no,” Foran explained.
Foran beat out current assistants Jim Dymock and Brett Kimmorley for the interim coaching position. His immediate success has already garnered support from within the NRL community. The 35-year-old’s transition from player to coach in such a short timeframe is unprecedented, but he appears unfazed by the pressure.
The Sea Eagles’ dominant display against the Dolphins included a strong defensive line and clinical attack. The team’s ability to execute a “complete performance” – maintaining intensity for longer periods – was a key factor in the victory, as highlighted by Foran. He emphasized the importance of building on this success, stating, “The challenge for them this week was to put in a complete performance and doing it for longer periods.”
Despite the turbulent week, Foran praised the players for their professionalism and commitment. “The week was great, the boys were outstanding – there was a lot going on, you can’t take away from that, but they turned up tonight,” he said. He acknowledged the talent within the squad, adding, “There’s a hell of a footy team in there and we know that, it just hasn’t been clicking… it’s just a matter of building on that.”
Foran’s appointment comes with the hope of replicating the success he experienced as a player with the Sea Eagles, where he won a premiership in 2011. Chairman Scott Penn believes Foran can inject a different attitude into the team, noting that he brought “that attitude to the coaching staff” during his time as an assistant. Penn stated, “That’s one of the key reasons we made the decision as early as we have.”
The Sea Eagles will look to continue their momentum as they navigate the remainder of the season under Foran’s leadership. The win against the Dolphins provides a much-needed boost and signals a potential shift in fortunes for the club. Foran, however, remains focused on the task at hand, emphasizing the need for continued improvement and consistency.
Foran’s surprise admission after the win was that he “felt like that was coming,” despite the chaotic circumstances surrounding his appointment. This confidence, coupled with the team’s impressive performance, suggests a promising future for the Manly Sea Eagles under their new interim coach.
