Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong-yeon said, “Gyeonggi Province is taking the lead in supporting companion animals through animal welfare,” and emphasized again, “Gyeonggi Province’s values of love, consideration, respect, coexistence, and a world in which we live together.”

Governor Kim said this on his Facebook page on the 25th, saying, “Please adopt rather than buy from ‘Companion Maru,’ which is full of the values of love, respect, consideration, and coexistence.”

Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong-yeon attended the opening ceremony of ‘Pangyeomaru’ on the 11th and said, “Pangyeomaru is a complex cultural space that anyone in the pet household can enjoy. It operates an animal protection and management building, a cultural center, etc., and provides facilities for abandoned animal protection and adoption, an animal hospital, etc. “We are in the process of providing respect for life education, operating a pet cultural festival, and creating additional picnic zones,” he said.

In addition, pet adoption requires: △ Completion of pre-adoption training → Confirmation of adopted animal and application → Document review and adoption consultation (screening and phone guidance within 10 days after the end of the application period) → Coordination of adoption date and adoption → Obligation to cooperate with follow-up care (6 days after adoption) It was further explained that follow-up management is carried out in this order.

‘Companion Maru’ has an area of 95,790㎡ and is equipped with facilities such as 1 cultural center building, 3 protection buildings, and 1 management building, and provides companion animal care such as protection and adoption of abandoned animals, operation of a veterinary hospital, education on respect for life, and grooming and training. We are conducting a professional training program.

Governor Kim Dong-yeon explained, “If you are hesitant about adoption, temporary protection is also possible. Gyeonggi Province is operating a ‘temporary protection system’ that helps rescued and protected animals grow properly through care at home for a certain period of time.”

Meanwhile, Gyeonggi Province is making policy efforts to establish a proper pet culture by improving systems and eradicating illegal activities to establish a pet culture.

Based on the recognition that there is a lot of work to be done to establish a culture of respect for life regardless of pet ownership, Gyeonggi Province is taking decisive measures not only to establish a mature companion animal culture but also to eradicate illegal activities, including animal abuse. So we are pursuing it.

The province is steadily promoting a pet theme park as a pet adoption education complex and cultural facility as well as a relaxation space for pet owners.

In this way, if a cultural base is established through a ‘pet theme park’, various positive effects are expected. The view is that it is possible not only to optimize facilities for timely treatment of abandoned animals, but also to create new occupations such as animal health nurses.

It is necessary to review not only education for the relevant occupation but also discovery of projects to foster related industries. Gyeonggi Province is supporting the theme park so that it can serve as a ‘mecca’ by protecting abandoned animals and adopting them for free, providing education and follow-up care for adoptive families, volunteer support, education on respect for life, and training related experts.

The province is making every effort to ensure that larger families and new family communities can live without inconvenience and increase self-esteem and satisfaction with each person’s life.

Respect for the life of companion animals and animals as members of the family, training of therapy dogs for abandoned dogs to help animals and people, support for medical and funeral expenses for companion animals, pet theme parks, and the Special Envoy’s firm response to animal abuse that goes against the changing times. This will be the ‘direction’ of the policy that pet families will fully sympathize with, and attention is focused on how the province will ‘speed up’ its future actions, including policies and systems already in place as well as support measures to be further reviewed.
