Hideo Kojima Eyes Film, Discusses AI, and His Creative Legacy
Updated June 10, 2025
Famed game creator Hideo Kojima recently shared insights into his future aspirations, views on artificial intelligence, and his unique approach to creative legacy. Kojima, known for titles like Death Stranding, revealed his interest in directing a film after finishing his current project, Physint.
When asked about his creative influences,Kojima cited filmmakers George Miller and Martin Scorsese as major inspirations. He keeps a running list of favorite films, including 2001: A Space Odyssey,Taxi Driver,Mad Max 2,and Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low.
Kojima reflected on how becoming a parent shifted his viewpoint. Early on, children are the family’s focus, but work later provides grounding. He recalled working intensely in his 20s but adjusted his schedule after having children. Now that his sons are self-reliant, he feels a renewed sense of urgency.
Addressing the themes in the Death Stranding 2 trailer, Kojima explained the line, ”We should not have connected,” highlights the importance of real-world experiences alongside internet connectivity for evolution.
Regarding AI and automation, Kojima stated a neutral position, uncertain about their potential impact on life.
While he sees himself potentially painting at 90, Kojima acknowledges the intense mental effort required for game development. He anticipates being in his late 60s after completing Physint, prompting his interest in filmmaking.
Kojima clarified that Kojima Productions would continue developing games while he pursues film projects.
I am not going to pass the baton to anyone. I will rather crush the baton… I don’t need to give “Hideo Kojima” to anyone. If I pass the baton to my staff and tell them to make things the same way I do, the company will not succeed and will go out of business.
Instead of passing on a direct legacy, Kojima hopes to inspire others. He explained that many creators tell him they were inspired by his games, receiving his “small fire” and using it to fuel their own unique creations.
What’s next
Looking ahead, Kojima aims to inspire a new generation of creators through his work, emphasizing individual inspiration over direct imitation, while potentially exploring new avenues in filmmaking.
