Kolkata vs Punjab: Historic IPL Match Sees Openers Shine with Half-Centuries

Kolkata: This is the first such match in the history of Indian Premier League. The match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings made history with the fireworks of the openers. Today’s Kolkata-Punjab match is the first IPL match where the openers of both the teams have scored the half-centuries. Kolkata openers Phil Salt and Sunil Narine and Punjab’s Prabhsimran Singh and Jonny Bairstow completed the half-centuries.

Punjab also got off to a great start as they set about replying to Kolkata’s mammoth target of 262 runs. Prabhsimran Singh and Jonny Bairstow added 93 runs for the opening wicket. Prabhsimran, who completed his fifty in 18 balls, scored 54 runs in 20 balls. The star was run out by Sunil Narine in the last ball of the sixth over. Jonny Bairstow scored an unbeaten 108 off 48 balls to lead Punjab to victory. Nine sixes and eight boundaries were born from Bairstow’s bat.

Phil Salt and Sunil Narine started with a century stand for Kolkata, who batted first. 138 runs were scored on the opening wicket when both of them netted. The partnership that lasted until the 11th over was broken when Sunil Narine got out. Narine scored 71 runs off 32 balls with four sixes and nine boundaries. Phil Salt was out with six sixes and a four off 37 balls.
