Table of Contents
The Subnautica community is incredibly notable to us. we understand the anticipation surrounding Subnautica 2, and want to address recent developments and reaffirm our unwavering commitment to delivering a truly exceptional experience. This message details challenges faced during development, leadership changes, and our renewed dedication to the game and the talented team building it.
Addressing Recent Development Challenges
We acquired Unknown Worlds in January 2023 with a clear vision: to foster the optimal environment for a prosperous Subnautica 2. The initial investment of $500 million, coupled with a potential $250 million earn-out, was structured to incentivize and reward the core creative leads. Approximately 90% of the potential earn-out was allocated to three former executives, contingent upon their continued leadership and active involvement in the game’s development.
Unluckily, this expectation was not met. Despite our significant investment and the trust placed in them, the former leadership team ultimately abandoned their responsibilities. This has directly impacted the project’s timeline and progress. Subnautica 2 was initially slated for an Early Access launch in early 2024,but that timeline has been significantly delayed.
we made repeated attempts to reinstate Charlie and Max as Game Director and Technical Director, respectively. Both declined. Following the performance of moonbreaker, we specifically requested Charlie dedicate his focus to subnautica 2. Instead,he pursued a personal film project, diverting crucial leadership and expertise away from the game.
This absence of core leadership has resulted in directional confusion and substantial delays. The current state of the Early access build also lacks the content volume we believe is necessary for a satisfying initial experience. We are deeply disappointed by thes actions and the breach of trust with our dedicated fanbase.
KRAFTON’s Renewed Commitment and Support for the Development Team
We have made the arduous but necessary decision to restructure the executive leadership of the project. Subnautica 2 remains actively in development, driven by a dedicated core team of passionate, accountable, and committed individuals. We have immense respect for their expertise and creativity and are providing them with full and unwavering support, allowing them to concentrate solely on delivering the game you deserve. This support includes ensuring fair and equitable compensation for all remaining Unknown Worlds employees who have consistently contributed to Subnautica 2’s development. Moving forward, transparency will be a cornerstone of our interaction. We understand the frustration caused by delays and lack of information, and we are committed to providing regular updates on the game’s progress.
