kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has indicated President Vladimir Putin is open to a meeting with US envoy for Ukraine, Derek Witkoff, as former President Donald Trump proposes a new round of economic pressure on Moscow if a ceasefire isn’t reached by Friday.
Trump’s Sanction Threat and Russia‘s Response
Trump has proposed imposing sanctions and secondary tariffs on Russia to discourage other nations from trading with the country, should a ceasefire not materialize by the end of the week. Though, he acknowledged Russia’s adeptness at circumventing existing sanctions – a point underscored by its current status as the world’s most sanctioned nation.
Peskov responded to Witkoff’s presence in Moscow positively, stating, “We are always happy to see Mr Witkoff in Moscow… We consider such contact significant, meaningful and useful.” He further suggested a potential meeting between Witkoff and Putin.
Stalled Peace Talks and Russia’s Core Objectives
Despite three rounds of negotiations since the spring, a resolution to the conflict remains elusive. Putin recently reiterated Russia’s primary goal: “to eradicate the reasons for the crisis in Ukraine and ensure Russia’s security.”
However, Moscow’s conditions for peace – demanding Ukraine’s neutrality, significant military reduction, and abandonment of NATO aspirations – are currently unacceptable to both Kyiv and its Western allies. These preconditions represent a ample obstacle to any meaningful progress in peace talks.
Nuclear rhetoric Concerns
Amidst the ongoing tensions, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov cautioned against escalating rhetoric surrounding nuclear weapons. “Everyone should be ‘very cautious’ with nuclear rhetoric,” he stated, highlighting the gravity of the situation and the potential for miscalculation. This statement comes as concerns linger about the possibility of nuclear escalation, particularly given the heightened geopolitical stakes.
