Ukrainian officials said an attack had occurred on North Korean troops stationed in the Kursk region of Russia.
On the morning of the 4th, local time, Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Deformation Countermeasures Center under the Committee of National Security and Defense of Ukraine, claimed on his Telegram channel that “the first North Korean soldiers have already been shot in Kursk.”
Specific details about when and how the attack took place and the extent of the damage were not disclosed.
There has been no official announcement from the Ukrainian government, and Russia has not yet confirmed whether there will be a fight.
Local Ukrainian media also reported that it may have attacked the North Korean army, citing Center Director Kovalenko, but the facts have not yet been confirmed.
Previously, Center Director Kovalenko said on the 31st of last month that there was no engagement with the North Korean military yet.
Ukrainian President Zelensky also said late last month that North Korean troops were preparing for war, and that there had been no fighting.
If Center Director Kovalenko’s claim is true, the Ukrainian military attacked the North Korean army less than a week after President Zelenskyy’s confirmation.
At least 7,000 to 8,000 North Korean troops are reported to be stationed in the Kursk region.
Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence Agency previously reported that North Korean troops were armed with 60mm mortars, anti-tank guided missiles, and night vision goggles.
