Kurt Russell Recalls Why He Turned Down Solid Snake Role in Metal Gear Solid

In a recent interview, actor Kurt Russell recalled that he was once asked to voice Solid Snake in Metal Gear Solid, but he also explained why he wasn’t interested in the proposal at the time.

Hideo Kojima, the producer of the “Metal Gear” series, is a true movie buff. Not only does he often share his movie-watching experiences on his personal Twitter, but he also invites Hollywood actors to star in many of his works this year, such as Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux from “Death Stranding”, and even director Guillermo Del Toro, etc., and in the latest “Death Stranding 2”, “Mad Max” director George Miller, etc., and in “Metal Gear Solid 5” released in 2015, also hired Kiefer Sudran of “24” to voice Venom Snake.

According to David Hayter, the English voice actor of Solid Snake in the original Metal Gear Solid series, revealed in 2016, Hideo Kojima actually once planned to cast Russell Cole, the actor who starred in the classic 1981 action film “Escape from New York” I came here to give voice to this character. After all, the Snake Plissken played by this actor in the film was the inspiration for Solid Snake, the protagonist of the “Metal Gear” series. Of course, Kurt Russell rejected the proposal at the time. In a recent interview with GQ magazine, he finally recalled this past incident and explained the reason for rejecting him.

“Look, I’m pretty lazy and people have asked me to do all kinds of things in all kinds of situations. I don’t know. I’m a director. You have to understand it from my point of view, whether it’s Elvis or Snake Plissken or Jack Patton or RJ McCready, there’s a blueprint. And that thing. You get drawn into it and you create and you want that world to come true.” He said

“I was doing interviews when the Elvis movie came out in 1979, and they said, ‘Please do Elvis for us.’ That’s not how it worked. I couldn’t freely switch to Elvis. You have to do your homework and perfect all before I can do it and get paid. I’m from a different generation. I have no interest in financially ‘expanding’ on the characters I’ve created in the past,” he said.

More importantly, Kurt Russell also stated that at the time he was not interested in works directed or created by anyone other than “Escape from New York” director John Carpenter.

“I read the script and said, ‘John didn’t write this,’ and this doesn’t smell right. John wasn’t involved here. I’m not going to do it. Let’s try something new, do something fresh.” Let’s create another classic character together,” he said

It’s clear that Kurt Russell has no major problems returning to reprise his role in Escape from New York, as he has an interest in participating in the long-rumored sequel, and has also appeared in several films. of Escape From New York: in the film he played Santa Claus, but considering that when he was asked to participate in Metal Gear Solid video games were not yet considered a mainstream medium, it is not difficult to understand why he refused due to his unfamiliarity with the half. But luckily, the final choice of voice actor for the English version, David Hayter, gave the players impressive performances.
