The Kyalami circuit in South Africa has received FIA approval for upgrades to Grade 1 status, potentially⁣ paving⁤ the way ⁣for a Formula 1 return to the continent. The approval marks a⁢ meaningful step⁤ in Kyalami’s ambition ⁤to⁣ play⁢ a central role in hosting future F1 races.

Located north of Johannesburg, Kyalami last hosted a grand Prix⁣ in 1993, the last ⁤time Formula 1 raced⁢ in Africa. Currently holding⁤ a Grade 2 rating,the circuit requires upgrades to meet F1 standards. Plans developed by Kyalami and Apex Circuit Designs ⁢focus on enhancing run-off areas, barrier systems, debris fencing, ⁣kerbs, and drainage, while ⁤maintaining the existing track layout.

Toby venter, the circuit owner, expressed⁤ enthusiasm about the future. “Today, we turn the page to a bold new chapter for Kyalami,” Venter said. “We are ready for the return of Formula 1 ⁢to⁢ African soil.”

Venter added, ‍”This is a defining ⁣moment⁣ for South African⁣ motorsport.
