Bass, during a press conference, stated the curfew and local emergency were necessary “to stop the vandalism, to stop the looting.” She reported that 23 businesses across the city had been looted the previous night, wiht graffiti causing significant property damage.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom addressed the situation, criticizing the deployment of federalized National Guardsmen and Marines as an overreaction. He argued that state and local law enforcement could have maintained order.
Newsom said the ICE raids were “very different than anything we’ve seen before.” He acknowledged the right to protest, stating, “Angelenos came out to exercise their constitutional right to free speech and assembly to protest their government’s actions.”
Tom Homan, President Trump’s border czar, defended the ICE operations. He said the agents were executing criminal search warrants related to customs fraud, tax evasion, and money laundering. Homan reiterated ICE’s commitment to enforcing immigration laws, even amidst “difficult” and “hazardous” conditions created by violent protesters.
The curfew, affecting about one square mile of downtown LA between Interstates 5, 10, and 110, including Skid Row, Chinatown, and the Fashion District, begins at 8 p.m. and ends at 6 a.m. Bass warned that curfew violators would face prosecution. She emphasized that the curfew was limited to a small area and “is not affecting the city” as a whole.
