Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass announced⁤ a curfew ‍for downtown⁣ Los Angeles as protests entered their fifth ‍day. The protests were sparked⁤ by Immigration and Customs Enforcement ‍(ICE) raids targeting criminal illegal immigrants.

Bass, during a press conference, stated the curfew⁢ and local⁣ emergency were necessary “to stop the vandalism, to stop the looting.” She reported that 23 businesses ⁤across ‍the city⁣ had been looted the previous night,wiht graffiti causing significant property damage.

California ‍Gov. Gavin Newsom addressed⁤ the situation, criticizing the deployment of ⁢federalized National⁤ Guardsmen and Marines as ⁢an overreaction. He argued⁢ that state and‍ local‍ law⁤ enforcement could have maintained order.

Newsom‍ said the ICE raids were⁣ “very different than anything we’ve seen before.” He ⁣acknowledged the right to protest, stating, “Angelenos came out to exercise⁢ their constitutional right to free speech and assembly to protest their government’s actions.”
