Los Angeles Immigration Protests Erupt After ICE raids; Federal Troops Deployed
Updated June 11, 2025
Los Angeles is facing widespread unrest following days of mass protests and violent clashes sparked by aggressive Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids, ordered by President Donald Trump. What began as scattered demonstrations has escalated into full-scale civil disorder, prompting the deployment of thousands of federal troops, including Marines.
Approximately 2,500 active-duty troops, including Marine Corps units, joined the California National Guard on tuesday evening, spreading out across East and South Los Angeles neighborhoods. The Pentagon confirmed the mobilization, but admitted there was “no prior coordination” with local authorities, Bloomberg reported. This lack of coordination has further strained relations between city officials and the federal government.
Los Angeles Police chief Dominic Caruso criticized the deployment. “There was no prior notice,” Caruso saeid in a press briefing. “We are now trying to coordinate in real-time with federal personnel on the ground—this is a recipe for confusion and escalation.”
The protests were triggered by ICE raids over the weekend, which reportedly led to the detention of over 1,200 undocumented immigrants in the Los Angeles area. Trump praised the operation on his TruthSocial account, calling it “a massive victory for law and order” and declaring California “a sanctuary no more.”
Human rights organizations and local residents have fiercely criticized the operation’s human cost. Eyewitness accounts describe agents storming homes and workplaces with assault rifles. CNN reported that numerous children were left stranded at schools and daycare centers after thier parents were arrested.
In South Gate, a predominantly Latino neighborhood, protests turned violent as demonstrators clashed with ICE units backed by federal marshals. Police used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse crowds after buildings were set ablaze and stores were looted.

ABC News reported that spontaneous protests began near downtown Los Angeles within hours of the initial ICE raids, quickly spreading to Hollywood, Inglewood, and Boyle Heights. By Monday, the city was in crisis mode.
NewsNationNow reported that some immigrant communities blocked streets to prevent ICE vehicles from entering residential areas.Protesters in East Los Angeles held signs reading “We are not criminals” and “Trump’s war is not our war,” chanting slogans against the militarization of immigration policy.
California gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency and demanded the White House “cease unilateral military action in our state.” He accused Trump of “weaponizing immigration enforcement to terrorize marginalized communities and provoke social collapse.”
White house Press Secretary sarah Kent stated that the President is “restoring federal authority where local Democrats have failed to uphold immigration laws” and accused protesters of “protecting criminals and enabling lawlessness.”
Gazeta.ru noted that Trump’s response was reminiscent of authoritarian crackdowns. “Deploying Marines against unarmed civilians in a city already inflamed by injustice is not a show of strength—it’s an admission of failure,” wrote columnist Igor Korotchenko.
The Los Angeles Times reported that at least 36 people have been hospitalized with injuries from crowd control weapons, and over 400 protesters have been arrested since Sunday. Several city council members have called for the immediate suspension of ICE activities in Los Angeles County.
