Lee Jae-myeong reappointment as party leader: Pro-Myung faction support and opposition within the Democratic Party of Korea

With Korean Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung’s position within the party consolidated thanks to his landslide victory in the April 10 general election, the “reappointment of Lee Jae-myung as party leader” card is emerging in earnest , focusing on the pro-Lee Jae-myung (pro-Myung) faction. On the 16th, Representative Jeong Seong-ho, leader of the pro-Myung faction, publicly added: “The reappointment of Representative Lee is not a bad card, in the sense that it can strengthen unity within the party and ensure the fight that the people want,” adding to speculation about Rep. Lee’s reappointment. However, there is opposition from some within the party, who say: “Rep. Lee didn’t win the election because he did well, so he might It seems arrogant for him to seek a second term.”

The Democratic Party leader elected at the August convention will lead the party in the 175-seat National Assembly for the next two years, along with the group’s leader elected next month. For this reason, those preparing for the group’s leader election are also paying close attention to Rep. Lee’s reappointment.

● Pro-Myeong faction: “We need to come up with a presidential plan by renominating the party leader.”

Rep. Jeong said in a phone call that day, “It is questionable whether he will be able to unite the party and properly oppose the regime if someone other than Representative Lee becomes the party leader.” He then added weight to the theory of reappointment as leader, saying: “Since there are no regulations restricting reappointment as party leader, reappointment is not impossible according to the party constitution.”
As the pro-Myung faction has consolidated its leading position within the party through this general election, the consensus within the party is that whether Rep. Lee is reappointed or not will depend on his will.

A pro-Myeong lawmaker said, “Representative Lee said that he personally has no intention of serving as party leader again,” but added, “However, if the party is truly in crisis and feels that it cannot cope without of him, he has no choice but to do it one more time.” An official close to Rep. Lee said, “Isn’t Rep. Lee really hoping to get re-elected rather than run again?”

There are also arguments within the pro-Myung faction that Lee must be reappointed as party leader to maintain his position as the main opposition presidential candidate during the remaining period until the presidential election. A pro-Myeong lawmaker who was re-elected said: “It is true that Representative Lee had many difficulties in carrying out his position as party leader due to judicial risks and opposition within the party, including those not Lee Jae-myeong. circles” and “In the 22nd National Assembly, a large number of new Lees representatives have entered the party.” “Thanks to the support of famous people, we will be able to achieve more results in the fight for people’s livelihood and rental income” .,” he said. Another pro-Myung lawmaker from the metropolitan area also said: “If I fulfill my duties as party leader well for the next two years, won’t I be able to win the presidential election in three years without too much difficulty?”

However, there are many conflicting opinions. An official with a slightly pro-name position said: “People didn’t vote for the Democratic Party because they did well, so how would they look at it if they said they were going to reappoint the party leader?” Non-profit circles criticized: “Is Representative Lee not calculating that it will be easier to avoid arrest as a party leader than as a council member if he is sentenced to prison in the first trial, like the ‘Daejang- don’t you suspect?”

● It is also argued that “the election of the leader also reflects the opinions of party members.”

There is also analysis that the leader election, which is expected to take place in early to mid-May before the August convention, will impact Rep. Lee’s reappointment as party leader. Currently, influential candidates for the leadership role include 4th-term legislators Kim Min-seok, Han Jeong-ae and 3rd-term legislators Kim Byeong-ki, Kim Seong-hwan, Kim Young-jin, Park Chan- dae and Cho Seung -rae.

A party leadership official said: “This is the first election to gauge the loyalty of lawmakers since the arrest motion was passed in September last year. He added: “If a candidate other than the pro-Myung candidate is unexpectedly elected as a leader, this representative could lead the party. “We will have no choice but to run again at the national convention to ensure control,” he said.

Meanwhile, within the pro-Myung faction, arguments began to emerge that the group’s leader, like the party leader, should be chosen to reflect the views of party members. The aim is to pass through the vote of practically all party members. A pro-Myeong-gye lawmaker said, “The election of the floor leader should no longer be considered a popular vote like the election of the class president” and “should reflect the will of party members and the public.”
