Lee Jae-myung, former governor of Gyeonggi-do, called for the murder of his nephew, whom he defended in the past, as a ‘dating violence felony’ during the last presidential election.

At the first hearing held today at the Seoul Central District Court’s civil 28 independent hearing, both former Governor Lee Jae-myung and lawyer Na Seung-cheol, who served as litigation representative, did not appear at the trial. “I’m trying to prove that it’s just violence,” he said.

A representative of the bereaved family held a press conference after the trial and pointed out that “in general, serial killings of one family are not expressed as dating violence.”

Regarding the former governor Lee’s submission to the court the day before through his legal representative, “I apologize to the bereaved family for my unconsidered expression” “The bereaved families are very disintegrating,” he said.

Mo Kim, the nephew of former Gyeonggi Governor Lee Jae-myung, visited the house of a woman he was dating in 2006 and killed the woman and mother, and his father was seriously injured while jumping from the balcony of an apartment on the 5th floor to avoid Mr. Kim.

Former governor Lee, who served as the lawyer for Kim’s first and second trial, said, “One of my family members committed a felony of dating violence in the past, but I can’t afford a lawyer. I defended this,” the bereaved family said in December last year, claiming that they suffered emotional pain due to these remarks, and demanded compensation of 100 million won.
