- Q&A: A young Soccer Player’s Journey Inspired by Lionel Messi
MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay — A photo taken in August 2017, before a scoreless match between Uruguay and Argentina, became a cherished memory for one young fan. Unlike most spectators who quickly forgot the game, for an 11-year-old boy, it was the day lionel Messi fulfilled his dream by posing for a picture with him. Now, that boy is a player for the Boston River reserve team, a first-division club.
Known as “Lucho,” the player treasures the moment with his childhood idol, the player who inspired him to pursue soccer. He now attempts to emulate Messi on the field every weekend with the Montevidean club, which will compete in the South American Cup.
his life changed after that afternoon when he skipped school to wait for the Argentinian star outside a hotel. As the players disembarked from the bus,the boy tried to get past the security fences. Messi intervened, allowing the photo to happen.
“It was a great madness,” the player recalled.”The next day I missed school again as I gave a lot of notes in the media. And when I returned to school, everyone asked for photos!” He had written a letter for Messi but forgot to give it to him in the excitement.
born on August 25,2005,the player has Argentine and Uruguayan heritage. He supports Argentina’s national team and a club in Montevideo. The 2017 encounter was the only time he saw the Argentinian national team in person. In 2021, when Argentina defeated Uruguay 1-0, he refused to attend the game at the stadium of a rival team.
Around that time, he was finishing his youth career and began playing in lower divisions in 2018. He played for Rentistas before signing with Boston River in 2024.
I like playing with 10, although that number is not always available because we use the same shirts as the professional squad. But if it is, I grab it. In addition, the position fell a bit in disuse, so many times I start from internal.
He aims to perform well in the reserve tournament and prepare for a potential debut.
Recently, the player watched a major soccer match at home with his family. While not on the field himself, he remains an avid fan.
At 19,he hopes to see Messi lift the cup in 2026 while he makes his own mark on the field. Dreams, he believes, are meant to be fulfilled.
