Lee Bong-ju suffered from ‘dystonia’, an incurable disease. In 2021, a major operation lasting 6 hours was carried out, but Lee Bong-ju said, “I don’t think there is any significant effect. I continued to receive rehabilitation treatment at home and in hospitals and oriental medicine clinics. “I found a way, but I think rehab at home is very effective,” he said.

Bongju Lee said, “I thought I was the most confident about my health, but as my body worsened, I became very depressed and everything was not normal. “But as I continue to take it positively, I think it’s getting better.”

On this day, Lee Bong-ju said, “In 2018, a friend who runs marathons with me and 7 to 8 people who like marathons got together to form a volunteer group. “We came together to create this in order to do good things and lend a helping hand to our neighbours,” he said. The name of the volunteer group is ‘Bonjour.’

He explained, “I delivered lunch boxes to neighbors in need, visited and cleaned families in need, and did a lot of quarantine activities during COVID-19.”

He continued, “There seem to be so many neighbors in need. Sometimes, if I look at him just a little bit, tears come to my eyes. “It really helps because the members work together.”

The host admired Lee Bong-ju, who worked hard to volunteer even when he was not feeling well.

Meanwhile, Lee Bong-ju is a ‘legendary marathoner’ with records such as a silver medal in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic marathon, a gold medal in the 1998 Bangkok Asian Games marathon, a victory in the 2001 Boston Marathon, a gold medal in the 2002 Busan Asian Games Marathon, and victory in the 2007 Seoul International Marathon.

As for what made him fall in love with marathons, Lee Bong-ju said, “I dreamed about it while watching teacher Son Ki-jeong. “It is the result of my efforts to use teacher Son Ki-jeong as my role model,” he said.

He also said that Lim Chun-ae was his idol and said, “I cut out a picture and worked with the mindset of ‘I want to become a great player like this player.'”

Asked if he would encourage his children to run marathons, he said, “I have two sons, and I’ve tried different sports since they were babies because I thought they might’ n inherit my abilities. “I tried everything from skating to swimming, basketball, and volleyball, but I wasn’t particularly good at anything,” she says with a laugh.

Bongju Lee said, “When I’m sick, my dream is to run on the playground or outside, even for an hour. I think that day will come sooner or later. “This year, I want to show my health and run again,” he said.
