The majority do not expect the war in Ukraine to end in 2024

After almost 23 months of war against Ukraine, German opinions on financial support, territorial cessions or Ukraine’s accession to the EU vary widely.

From the perspective of most Germans, the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine will not end in 2024. Only one in ten Germans (9 percent) believes that an end to the war is likely this year, according to a survey published by the Infratest dimap institute for the ARD Deutschlandtrend. This corresponds to a decrease of 23 percentage points compared to January 2023. 87 percent of Germans assume that the war will not end in 2024.

According to WDR, this is a representative survey for which 1,321 eligible voters were surveyed both online and by telephone on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.

Almost every second person (44 percent) believes that in order to end the war it is necessary for Ukraine to cede territory to Russia. This is an increase of 9 points compared to March 2023. 43 percent of those eligible to vote do not agree with this.

Germany’s support for financial support for Ukraine has declined significantly over the course of the war, which has now lasted almost two years. 41 percent consider this to be too extensive, which corresponds to an increase of 21 points compared to the end of April 2022. At that time, the war had started two months ago.

Ukraine’s accession to the EU

The opinion of those surveyed on the possible admission of Ukraine to the EU and NATO is divided. 53 percent (minus 5 points compared to February 2023) think it is right that Ukraine should be admitted to the EU in the long term. With regard to NATO, 44 percent agreed with this statement (minus 7 points). The EU decided to start accession negotiations with Ukraine in December. However, it will probably be many years before Ukraine actually joins the confederation of states.
