Legislative/Regional in Togo: FOSELR takes stock of voting day

The Togolese went to the polls last Monday for the legislative and regional elections, a double vote with high stakes.

A total of 113 deputies and 179 regional councilors will be elected following these elections.

On election day, the “Legislative and Regional Election Security Force” (FOSELR) ensured coverage of all voting centers by deploying its elements there.

This Force’s mission is to guarantee security and preserve a climate of peace and serenity throughout the national territory before, during and after the elections.

Overall, “the voting operations, counting and transportation of results to the headquarters of the Independent Local Electoral Commissions (CELI) took place peacefully and calmly. However, around fifteen incidents, without serious consequences on the conduct of the vote, were recorded,” underlines FOSELR in a press release.

“They were very quickly brought under control thanks to the prompt reactions of the presidents of CELI, elements of the Force and the vigilance and patience of the populations,” she specifies.

Among these incidents, 5 were reported in the savannah region, 2 in the Kara region, 1 in the Central region, 5 in the Plateaux region, 1 in the Maritime region and 1 in Lomé.

“Some have been the subject of complaints filed with the police and procedures are underway,” the press release indicates.

FOSLER “congratulates all the actors involved, in particular the CENI and its branches, the political parties, the media and the populations for the maturity they have demonstrated with a view to the outcome of this double election in peace and quiet total”.

She salutes the “good coordination and all the positive interactions which reigned throughout the process leading to these elections”.

Furthermore, FOSELR invites the various political parties to “raise awareness among their activists and supporters about the civic behavior to adopt during this period of waiting for results”.

Remember that the FOSELR is made up of defense and security forces such as the national police, the national gendarmerie and the operational reserve.

It is placed under the supervision of the independent national electoral commission (CENI) and the operational command of the Ministry of Security. FIN
