Saint-Nazaire, France – Known for shipbuilding, the⁢ French port city of Saint-Nazaire is set to become a departure point⁢ for a unique transatlantic journey. Starting in August 2025, the Neoliner Origin, a groundbreaking cargo ⁤ship equipped with innovative sails, will offer passenger berths alongside its freight capacity.

“While it’s not a customary cruise, it’s a new way to⁢ travel,” emphasizes Jean Zanuttini, president of Neoline, the Nantes-based startup behind the project.

The Neoliner Origin, currently under construction in Turkey⁣ with sails designed by Chantiers de l’Atlantique, will offer voyages to Baltimore, Maryland, just a short train ride from New York City.Other destinations include Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon and Halifax, Canada.

A Nod to the Past, Powered by Innovation

“We envisioned passenger space from the beginning,” Zanuttini⁢ says. “It’s a throwback to the⁣ early ⁣transatlantic liners, but with modern amenities and connectivity.”

The 136-meter-long vessel is propelled by two tilting carbon⁤ masts and ⁤two massive 1,500-square-meter rigid sails, a system known as Solidsail. Developed by Chantiers⁣ de l’Atlantique, Solidsail was initially conceived for cruise ships, with the first such vessel set to launch in June 2026. However, Neoline’s cargo ship will be the first to utilize this cutting-edge propulsion technology.

To manage passenger bookings, Neoline has partnered with Sailcoop, a Breton cooperative specializing in passenger transport by sail. The companies aim for a monthly departure schedule, with the second Neoline cargo ship slated for completion in 2027.
