Letitia Wright faced severe online harassment, including threats stating she deserved to die, following speculation about her personal life and sexual orientation, as reported by essence.com and complex.com. The 32-year-old Black Panther star addressed the vitriol during an Oct. 5 appearance on Paloma Faith’s Mad, Sad, Bad podcast. When asked by the host if the backlash had genuinely reached that severity, Wright confirmed, Yeah. It’s that bad.
The backlash intensified after public appearances and social media posts linked her to a woman named Angel-Vicki.
The scrutiny began after Wright and Angel-Vicki appeared together on Sept. 3 at a press night for Wright’s play The Story at London’s National Theatre, according to complex.com. Angel-Vicki subsequently posted photos of the event with captions praising the actress, alongside images of the two in matching pajamas accompanied by the phrase mi amor.
Complex.com noted that Angel-Vicki’s Instagram bio temporarily listed WLW
and Married,
while an account linked to Wright reportedly responded affirmatively when asked if she had married. Both women deactivated their accounts shortly afterward, and neither has directly confirmed a marriage or addressed her sexual orientation.
Letitia Wright Confronts Privacy Violations and Social Media Threats
During her interview with Paloma Faith, Wright explained that she actively avoids reading the hateful messages directed at her online. If someone was to sit and have a conversation with me and just listen to me, I bet you half of the comments that they’re saying about me would be different,
Wright said, as detailed by essence.com. The actress emphasized that her professional visibility does not forfeit her right to a private existence. Just because I have a public talent doesn’t mean that the other parts of my life is a free-for-all,
she stated.
Balancing Christian Faith and Personal Complexity
Wright spoke candidly about the intersections of her Christian faith and personal identity, amid criticism over her relationships. She described feeling pressured by external expectations to fit into rigid categories rather than embracing personal nuance. I feel like you’re not allowed to be complex,
Wright explained on the podcast. So you have to be either one way or the other.
I’m allowed to be complex and different and whole and still be worthy of love,
she said.
