Korean Medical Association (KMA) President-elect Lim Hyun-taek, whose term begins next month, announced on Oct. 8 that he has requested cooperation to take over as chairman of the Association’s emergency response committee Korean doctor as soon as possible before the start of his term.

President-elect Lim’s transition committee said today: “As the current situation is becoming increasingly serious, we believe that reorganizing the organization by eliminating confusion and unifying the diversified channels into one medical association is the most reasonable plan for the 140,000 member doctors and medical students.” He said: “It would be good for President-elect Lim Hyun-taek to take on the responsibility of chairing the emergency committee and embody the wishes of doctors and medical students.”

At the same time, he said: “We request that the National Assembly Steering Committee and the Emergency Committee cooperate quickly so that President-elect Lim Hyun-taek can carry out his duties as chairman of the Emergency Committee as soon as possible” and he added, “I will fulfill my role as president-elect of the Korean Medical Association.”

The Korean Medical Association held an extraordinary general meeting of delegates on February 7 and formed an “Emergency Response Committee to Prevent a Surge in the Number of Medical School Students”. Emergency Committee Chairman Kim Taek-woo, who was elected to the National Assembly on the 10th of the same month, currently heads the Emergency Committee.

Immediately after being elected the 42nd president of the Korean Medical Association in elections held on the 26th of last month, President-elect Lim expressed his intention to serve as joint emergency chairman with Chairman Kim. However, it is believed that this official letter was sent when the current emergency committee did not accept it.

In an official document, the transition committee states: “Contrary to intentions, during the operation of the emergency committee, numerous decisions were made and external opinions were expressed contrary to the will of the president-elect, resulting in serious internal consequences and external confusion ”.

Meanwhile, President-elect Lim, whose term begins on the 1st of next month, is classified as a “hardliner” even within the Korean Medical Association. Regarding the government’s policy of increasing the number of medical students by 2,000, he also argued that “the number of students in medical schools should be reduced from 500 to 1,000.”

Unlike the current Emergency Committee of the Korean Medical Association, which rates the meeting between President Seok-yeol Yoon and Emergency Committee Chairman Park Dan of the Korean Medical Association on the 4th as “significant,” President-elect Lim he posted on his social media, “What should I do if I don’t understand, no matter how much I teach?” He also published a post in which he alluded to criticisms of President Park, such as: “Some internal enemies give me more trouble than a huge external enemy.”
