Majority of Germans believe Putin is attacking NATO

If Russia wins its war of aggression against Ukraine, there will also be an attack on NATO. At least that’s what a slim majority of Germans believe.

The majority of Germans assume that Russia under President Vladimir Putin will also attack countries that are members of the NATO defense alliance. This emerges from the current RTL/ntv “Trend Barometer”, which was carried out by the opinion research institute Forsa.

As a result, 54 percent of respondents believe that Putin will attack NATO countries if Russia wins the war of aggression against Ukraine. 39 percent of those surveyed rule this out. The majority of supporters of the traffic light parties and the Union agree with the first option. The majority of supporters of the Left and AfD, on the other hand, do not believe in a Russian attack on NATO.

52 percent for the reintroduction of compulsory military service

Just over half of Germans are also in favor of reintroducing compulsory military service. Accordingly, 52 percent of those surveyed support the reintroduction of compulsory military service. 44 percent are against it. This means that the numbers are almost unchanged compared to last March: At that time, 43 percent of those surveyed expressed their rejection, and 52 percent were also in favor.

Since the start of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine in February 2022, support for reintroducing compulsory military service has been increasing almost constantly, according to the RTL/ntv “Trend Barometer”. In March 2022, 44 percent were in favor of it, and in July of the same year, 51 percent of those surveyed. After a brief dip in February 2023 (45 percent), approval is now increasing again.

The opinion research institute Forsa surveyed 1,009 people in Germany from April 5th to 8th. The question was “Should conscription be reintroduced in Germany?” and “If Russia wins the war in Ukraine, will Putin also attack countries that are members of NATO?”
