Updated June 28, 2025
At the Faith and Freedom Coalition summit in Washington, D.C., Republican
leaders highlighted Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old Democratic socialist,
as a symbol of what they see as the Democratic Party’s radical shift.
Mamdani is likely to become the Democratic nominee for mayor of New York
City.
Mamdani defeated former New York Gov. andrew Cuomo in the primary by
focusing on affordability issues. His platform includes raising taxes on
wealthy individuals and corporations, funding city-owned grocery stores,
eliminating bus fares, and expanding public housing.
His victory has quickly become a talking point for Republicans, who are
using it to portray Democrats as radical socialists.

The National Republican Congressional Committee is also attempting to link
the Democratic Party to Mamdani.
Rep.Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.), who represents a swing district outside New
York City and served with Mamdani in the state legislature, said on X
that Democrats in New York “will pay the price for this insanity at the
ballot box.”

Democratic Party is trending towards “open borders, inflationary
spending, weak America,” referencing the situation in New York.
While some progressive Democrats support Mamdani, some party leaders have
not endorsed him. Some moderate Democrats representing New york’s suburbs
have criticized him and declined to back his campaign.
Mamdani, who has been critical of the Israeli government, has faced
accusations of antisemitism regarding past statements and proposals. He
has responded by highlighting his policies to combat antisemitism,
stating his desire to focus on city issues, and affirming his support for
Israel’s right to exist as a state with equal rights for all.
Virginia Gov. Glenn youngkin also criticized Mamdani at the Faith and
Freedom Coalition summit, attempting to connect him to the Democratic
party.
Youngkin said that the progressive left will continue to push the country
towards socialism, referencing Mamdani’s nomination as an example. He
added that elections have consequences.
What’s next
Mamdani’s campaign will likely continue to be a focal point for
Republicans seeking to energize their base and attack Democrats in the
lead-up to the next election cycle.
