A 60-year-old man from Mansfield, Notts., has been diagnosed with early-stage esophageal cancer after mistaking persistent symptoms for common heartburn and acid reflux for several years.
John Wardman, a businessman in his family’s appliance business and a father of one, reported experiencing acid reflux and heartburn for two to three years prior to his diagnosis. During this time, he relied heavily on Gaviscon, an over-the-counter treatment, to manage the discomfort.
Wardman noted that the symptoms typically appeared after he ate spicy food or drank wine. Because of this pattern, he assumed the issues were simply one of those things
he had to live with.
Warning Signs and Diagnosis
The situation progressed as Wardman began experiencing new and more severe symptoms that he now recognizes as warning signs. These included waking suddenly during the night choking and occasional mild chest discomfort.
Wardman observed that the reflux did not improve even while he was on holiday and relaxing. Upon returning, he contacted his general practitioner (GP).
Although his GP initially provided new medication, Wardman developed another symptom about a week later: the sensation of food traveling down his throat. This led to an urgent referral for investigation, and tests subsequently confirmed early-stage cancer of the esophagus, which is the food pipe.
Wardman is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment. He is now urging others not to ignore persistent heartburn, noting that esophageal cancer is the fourth biggest cancer killer in men in the U.K.
Understanding Esophageal Cancer Symptoms
The National Health Service (NHS) identifies several symptoms associated with esophageal cancer that may overlap with less severe digestive issues. These include:
- Problems swallowing, a condition known as dysphagia
- Feeling or being sick
- Heartburn or acid reflux
- Symptoms of indigestion, such as frequent burping
Because these symptoms often mimic gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or general indigestion, they can be easily dismissed or managed with over-the-counter medications, potentially delaying a formal diagnosis.
Clinical Context
The case highlights the challenge of distinguishing between chronic acid reflux and more serious esophageal pathologies. While heartburn is a common experience, persistent symptoms that do not resolve with medication or lifestyle changes may require clinical investigation.
Medical professionals emphasize the importance of monitoring for “red flag” symptoms, such as the difficulty in swallowing or nighttime choking, which differentiate malignant growths from standard reflux.
