Super Typhoon Sinlaku, the strongest storm on Earth so far in 2026, is moving toward several remote U.S. Islands in the Pacific Ocean, bringing the threat of destructive winds and widespread flooding to the Mariana Islands archipelago.

The storm is on track to move over the Northern Mariana Islands late Tuesday, April 14, 2026, local time. The National Weather Service warned that the system could cause lengthy power outages and significant flooding across the region.

The Joint Typhoon Warning Center reported that on Monday, April 13, 2026, Sinlaku was producing sustained winds of 173 mph (278 kph) as it approached the islands of Saipan, Tinian and Rota. While the storm is expected to weaken slightly over the coming days, meteorologists forecast it will cross the islands as a Category 4 or 5 typhoon.

Impact on Northern Mariana Islands and Guam

The most severe conditions are expected to hit Saipan and Tinian. Approximately 50,000 people reside on these three islands, with the majority living on Saipan, the capital of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Guam, a U.S. Territory with about 170,000 residents and several American military installations, is not expected to take a direct hit. However, the island is still bracing for damaging winds and heavy rain. U.S. Military officials, who control about one-third of the land on Guam, have warned personnel to shelter in place and prepare for the storm.

Joshua Schank, a lead meteorologist in Guam for the weather service, stated that the typhoon has remained on a track that puts it going over or just skirting along Tinian and Saipan.

Forecasted Weather Conditions

The National Weather Service in Guam has issued several warnings for the region. The combination of powerful winds and rainfall totals forecast to exceed 300mm between April 13 and April 16, 2026, is expected to create hazardous seas and storm surges.

Following the initial arrival of the storm, officials expect the following risks:

  • Flash flooding
  • Mudslides
  • Severe wind damage
  • Lengthy power outages

Storm Development and Trajectory

Super Typhoon Sinlaku originated as a cluster of thunderstorms over the seas of Micronesia. It strengthened into a tropical storm and then a typhoon on Friday, April 10, and Saturday, April 11, 2026.

The system intensified rapidly over the weekend, with sustained winds reaching 150 mph on Sunday, April 12, 2026. Forecasts indicated the storm would continue to strengthen rapidly, with winds reaching 165 mph as it moved through the western Pacific islands.

A slight northward shift in the storm’s track is what has made a direct hit on Guam unlikely, shifting the brunt of the impact toward Saipan and Tinian.

Beyond the U.S. Territories, other regions are monitoring the system’s progress. Reports indicate that Cambodia is bracing for potential storm damage resulting from Super Typhoon Sinlaku.
