One of the injured individuals, identified as Mr. A, exhibited symptoms of a brain hemorrhage and was urgently airlifted to a hospital in Pohang at around 9:40 am.

Authorities confirmed that the accident occurred while the victims were camping near Turtle Rock. Eyewitness Oh Geun (61) recounted the incident, stating, “At the time of the accident, there were approximately 20 to 30 tourists and around 5 to 6 parked cars in the area.” He continued, “Just before the collapse, there was a rolling sound that lasted for about 3 seconds. Then, with a loud thud, the rocks came crashing down.”

Oh Geun also mentioned, “Following the accident, chaos ensued as many people scrambled to safety.”

In light of the incident, Ulleung-gun officials noted that the area where the accident occurred had warning signs indicating the risk of rock falls, suggesting that it was a natural event. They urged tourists to exercise caution and refrain from entering areas with warning signs. Furthermore, they emphasized that Ulleungdo is prone to rock falls due to its geographical characteristics. Although authorities regularly inform residents and tourists about the dangers, they do not have the authority to forcibly prevent entry into hazardous zones.

To ensure public safety and prevent further collapses, Ulleung-gun dispatched an excavator to remove damaged vehicles and debris. Additionally, they have implemented control measures in the vicinity of Turtle Rock.
