The study, published September 15, 2024, revealed that individuals not following a Mediterranean-style diet tended to have more severe gum disease, especially those who frequently consumed red meat.
Study Details and Findings
Researchers analyzed data from a cohort of UK residents, assessing their dietary habits and periodontal health. The findings indicated a strong correlation between dietary patterns and the severity of gum disease. Specifically, a higher intake of red meat was associated with increased inflammation and more advanced stages of periodontitis.
“There is emerging evidence about the role that a balanced diet might have in maintaining a periodontal healthy status,” stated Professor Luigi Nibali, lead author and a Professor of Periodontology from King’s College London. “Our research shows the potential effect that a nutrient-dense, plant-rich diet could play in improving the nation’s gum health. Nevertheless,more inquiry is needed to develop personalised approaches to help people manage their gum health.”
Dr. Giuseppe mainas, first author of the study and postdoctoral researcher at King’s College London, added that the research highlights the importance of considering dietary factors in preventative dental care.
