Toto Wolff of Mercedes F1 laughed at the rear wing from Red Bull as “looking at the ghosts” about the design.
Red Bull F1 referred to an image of the “score mark” inside the end plate of the rear wing of the Mercedes W12, pointing out that the lower main plate of the rear wing may be bent.
Following complaints from Red Bull F1, the FIA is conducting a new load test on the rear wing.
But after Lewis Hamilton took pole position by a margin of 0.455 seconds over Max Verstappen, Toto Wolff dismissed the much-talked-about rear wing trick.
Regarding the above image, Toto Wolff commented, “Who distributed it to the media? Is Shocker!”
“Can you show me what’s in the photo? Nothing is in this photo, except it’s scratched.”
“A ghost! I don’t know where they got this photo or what it actually looks like … a ghost!”
After qualifying, Red Bull F1 team representative Christian Horner suggested that Mercedes’ linear speed had returned to “control”, based on the data the team saw.
Ironically again, Toto Wolff commented, “Are they looking at data and photos about straight performance?”
“This is a non-power sensitive track. I think they did a good job. Their straight speed on the big wing was the same as us. I’m glad they’re happy.”
“Let’s go to Saudi Arabia. Comments may come again.”
Toto Wolff says he and Mercedes find it annoying to deal with what comes out of the Red Bull F1 camp.
“Kick-off or ongoing discussions can no longer be followed,” Toto Wolff said.
“I’m making decisions for myself and the team. We don’t do that, we simply can’t … we’re having a hard time commenting on the rumors coming out of you. “
Toto Wolff also claimed that the Mercedes F1 wasn’t worried about the results of the new test.
“They (FIA) are trying to load test and I think it’s for next year, to make the load test more robust and to check how much the wing bends,” said Toto Wolff.
“I don’t think it’s included in the regulations or has a TD (Technical Directive), and it’s experimental.”
“It’s interesting to see the results because we believe we’re on the good side. But I’m preempting so I don’t know what the results will be. I don’t even know when they want to do it.”
