Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich confirmed on August 13, 2026, that the Japanese Bitcoin treasury firm’s holdings remain unchanged at 43,000 BTC, dismissing market speculation that the company had sold a multi-million-dollar stake. The clarification followed an on-chain transfer of 5,014 BTC worth approximately $320 million to $322 million over a 24-hour window.
Routine Custody Transfer Triggers $320 Million Speculation
Market watchers grew anxious after on-chain trackers flagged the sudden movement of 5,014 BTC, an asset batch valued at roughly $322 million at the time of the transaction. According to statements given to Cointelegraph on August 13, 2026, by Simon Gerovich, the transfer was entirely operational and part of routine custody-related work. Gerovich noted that the network fee for shifting the capital block cost roughly $8. Despite the volume moving across wallets, Metaplanet’s total treasury count did not drop, staying at 43,000 BTC. Yet executive statements confirmed no sell order was executed. Arkham data cited by BloomingBit shows that Metaplanet currently carries roughly $1.4 billion in unrealized losses on its overall Bitcoin stack, adding sensitivity to any large wallet movements detected by automated blockchain monitors.
Asia’s Largest Public Bitcoin Holder Pursues 210,000 Target
Metaplanet retains its standing as the world’s third-largest Bitcoin holder among listed companies and the largest in Asia. Company leadership has refused to slow its accumulation roadmap. According to BloomingBit, Metaplanet intends to expand its reserves to 100,000 BTC by the end of this year and scale that target further to 210,000 BTC by the close of 2027.
Beyond direct token accumulation, the firm is diversifying its business scope through targeted investments in domestic digital infrastructure. In March, the company launched Metaplanet Ventures, earmarking approximately 4 billion yen—equal to about $25 million—to build out Japan’s digital-asset and Bitcoin infrastructure over the next two to three years. By pairing treasury accumulation with regional infrastructure investments, Metaplanet continues to position itself as a corporate proxy for cryptocurrency exposure in the Asian market.
