Meta’s Ray-Ban Stories Selling Poorly, With Less Than 10% of Sales Activated Monthly

Struggles Continue for Meta’s Ray-Ban Stories Glasses

In a recent report, the Wall Street News Agency Journal has cited internal company documents revealing concerning figures regarding Meta’s smart glasses, Ray-Ban Stories. It appears that between September 2021 and February 2023, only a mere 27,000 pieces were activated on a monthly basis out of a total sales figure of approximately 300,000 units, accounting for less than 10% of sales.

Further exacerbating the situation, it was reported in April that Meta fell short of its target once again, managing to sell just 120,000 pieces of Ray-Ban Stories, less than half of the intended sales figure of 300,000 pieces.

Meta and Ray-Ban joined forces back in 2021 to develop the innovative smart glasses, Ray-Ban Stories. These glasses boasted features such as the ability to capture and share photos and videos, listen to music, and even answer phone calls through voice commands. Additionally, they were designed to seamlessly connect with various social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, Tweet (now known as X), TikTok, Snapchat, and more.

However, customers have expressed their dissatisfaction with the product, citing technical issues such as connectivity problems, malfunctioning voice commands, short battery life, and the inability to import files from other devices. Astonishingly, it has been observed that 13% of customers have returned the glasses.

The disappointing performance of Ray-Ban Stories glasses poses a significant setback for Reality Labs, the division responsible for overseeing Meta’s metaverse development projects, which include augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technology. Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO and Founder of Meta, has already faced substantial losses of nearly $8 billion in the first half of 2023, and management anticipates further increasing losses in the coming year.

Despite the challenges, there have been discussions about Meta potentially launching a second-generation Ray-Ban Stories with enhancements to the camera and battery performance in 2024. However, it remains uncertain whether the second-generation glasses will maintain the same price point of $299 as their predecessor.
