Southern California regional passenger rail provider Metrolink is waiving fares across its entire system on Wednesday, Oct. 7, in recognition of California Clean Air Day, offering commuters a zero-cost alternative as regular gasoline prices hover above $6 per gallon statewide.
Systemwide Free Fares and Participating Routes
Throughout the day, travelers can board any train without a ticket for unlimited access across Metrolink’s 545-mile, six-county system. The promotion includes the Arrow service operating between San Bernardino and Redlands. According to AAA figures cited by the agency, the statewide average for a regular gallon of gasoline reached $6.38 this week, marking an increase of more than $1.70 compared to the same period last year. The one-day fare waiver is presented by Visit Ventura. Metrolink Board Chair Doug Chaffee noted that the initiative provides financial relief for families while supporting environmental goals. Leaving the car behind for a single trip yields immediate savings at the pump, reduces road congestion, and cuts emissions, according to the agency.
Smooth Regional Transit Connections
To maintain continuous transit options, several local transit providers are also waiving passenger fares on Oct. 7. The coordinated effort ensures no-cost connections with regional networks including LA Metro, OC Bus, Riverside Transit Agency, Omnitrans, Victor Valley Transit Authority, Mountain Transit, and the Ventura County Transportation Commission.
Statewide Clean Air Initiatives and Sustainable Operations
California Clean Air Day is an annual statewide initiative designed to promote collective actions that improve air quality. Because transportation remains a major source of greenhouse gas emissions in California, Metrolink utilizes a locomotive fleet powered by renewable fuel made from recycled natural fats and vegetable oils to lower emissions compared to standard diesel. Newer equipment, such as the Arrow service’s Zero-Emission Multiple Unit, further supports the agency’s green transit goals. The Oct. 7 event marks one of three board-approved free-ride promotions held annually by Metrolink, alongside Transit Equity Day on Feb. 4 and Earth Day on April 22.
