Sheinbaum Cites Progress on Cartels, Migration Amid Trump Threats
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated on January 12, 2026, that Mexican efforts to dismantle drug cartels and reduce migration toward the United States are yielding “compelling results,” responding to potential intervention by a future Trump administration.
These comments followed a statement by former President Donald Trump on January 5,2026,to Fox News, where he claimed the U.S. had eliminated 97% of drug trafficking via maritime routes and intends to target cartels operating on land.Trump also indicated the administration was beginning to add militarized zones to the southern border.
Sheinbaum, elected in June 2024, has prioritized maintaining a strong relationship with the U.S. government. This contrasts with the situation in Venezuela, where a U.S. military raid in 2023 led to the removal of Nicolás Maduro from power.
Sheinbaum’s approach emphasizes a measured response to challenges, a strategy she has described as maintaining a “cool head.”
