This is not the first time Mexico and the USA have clashed in the U-20 Women’s World Cup. In 2016, the Americans defeated the Mexicans 2-1 in the quarterfinals, with goals from Watt and Hedge, and María Sánchez scoring for Mexico.
The U-20 women’s team has struggled to progress beyond the group stage, mirroring the senior men’s team. The new format, which includes a round of 16, saw the women’s “Tri” fail to advance to their fourth match.
