Enhanced Photo Organization with Artificial Intelligence
Microsoft is rolling out a new feature to the Photos app on Windows 11 designed to streamline photo library management. Available initially to windows 11 Insiders on Copilot Plus PCs, this update leverages artificial intelligence to automatically categorize images, reducing clutter and improving searchability.
Initial Categorization Focus
The AI currently focuses on four key image types: screenshots, receipts, identity documents (like passports and driver’s licenses), and handwritten notes. Importantly, the categorization is visually driven and functions nonetheless of the language present within the image; for example, a photo of a Hungarian passport will still be correctly filed with other identity documents, according to the official Windows Insider Blog.
Where to Find Categorized Photos
Once the Photos app processes your images, these automatically created folders will appear under the “Categories” section in the left-hand navigation bar. This provides a dedicated space for quick access to frequently needed document types.
Future Potential: Customizable Categories
While the initial release focuses on these four categories, Microsoft acknowledges the potential for user-defined categories. The ability to specify custom folders – such as those for pets, travel destinations, or hobbies - would substantially enhance the app’s organizational capabilities and provide a more personalized experience.
