Migrant Workers: The number of guest workers will be one-sixth of the state’s population

Thiruvananthapuram: Study shows that the number of migrant workers in the state will increase to one-sixth of the state’s population. According to a study by the Evaluation Division under the State Planning Board, this will happen within eight years. By 2030, the number of guest workers in Kerala will increase to 60 lakhs. At that time the population of Kerala was estimated to be 3.60 crores.

These figures are contained in the study Report on ‘Guest Workers, the Unorganized Labor Sector and Urbanization’. Guest workers in Kerala feel that the best workplace is the one with the best pay and the most social atmosphere. According to figures for 2017-18, the average number of migrants is expected to rise from 45.5 lakh to 47.9 lakh by 2025. It will be 55.9 lakh to 59.7 lakh by 2030, the study says.

But the study says that as employment increases, so does the number. At present there are about 10.3 lakh families living in other states in Kerala. This will increase to 13.2 lakhs in 2025 and 15.2 lakhs in 2030. The number of short-term migrant workers will increase to 34.4 lakh by 2025 and 44 lakh by 2030.

Currently, most of the guest workers are employed in the construction sector. 17.5 lakh people will come. The manufacturing sector employs 6.3 lakh people. It employs three lakh people in the agricultural allied sector and 1.7 lakh people in the hotel and restaurant sector.
