Milei Revives Malvinas Sovereignty Clash

Speaking in a nationally televised address, Milei declared that Buenos Aires would need to recover the islands, which Argentina refers to as Las Malvinas.

World Cup Banner Sparks Diplomatic Row

The renewed diplomatic tensions follow a series of friction points between Argentina and Britain, including a recent World Cup soccer match where Argentine players displayed a banner reading Las Malvinas son Argentinas after defeating England.

British Business Secretary Peter Kyle called the banner entirely inappropriate and urged FIFA to investigate, while a spokesperson for Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that the Falkland Islands definitely belong to Britain. FIFA’s independent disciplinary committee began reviewing match reports to determine whether to open disciplinary proceedings, while Milei defended the players’ actions as a legitimate expression of national feeling on Radio El Observador.

Threats Against the Sea Lion Oil Project

Alongside political fallout from the football match, Milei’s administration targeted energy exploration in the South Atlantic. The major offshore oil development is located roughly 220 kilometers north of the Falkland Islands and is co-developed by Britain’s Rockhopper Exploration and Israel’s Navitas Petroleum, with first oil targeted for early 2028. Argentina views the project as an unlawful exploitation of resources in waters under its sovereign claim. Rockhopper Exploration declined to comment on the threats, while CNBC reported it was awaiting a response from Navitas Petroleum.

Shifting Alliances and Washington’s Stance

Milei’s shift in tone coincides with fraying ties between the United States and Britain. According to CNBC, U.S. President Donald Trump declined to indicate whether Washington would assist Britain in a future conflict with Argentina over the islands, hinting in a GB News interview that the U.S. might withhold backing due to a perceived lack of support for the Iran war. Milei touted his relationship with Trump during his speech, suggesting the White House is weighing a shift in its Falklands position because Argentina acts as a reliable ally.

London Stands Firm on Archipelago Control

British officials quickly pushed back against the reasserted claims. According to CNBC, U.K. Defense Minister Wes Streeting stated on social media that Milei’s remarks reflect domestic political maneuvering in Argentina rather than reality.

Streeting emphasized that the Falklands remain British because residents choose that status, calling the U.K. commitment absolute and unshakeable. Britain has maintained control over the South Atlantic archipelago since 1833, following a brief war fought against Argentina in 1982.
