Accra, Ghana, is preparing to host the Mining in Motion 2025 Summit, a key event for Africa’s mining sector. The summit, themed “Driving Sustainable Mining and Local Growth for Global Impact,” will convene government officials, mining executives, investors, and community leaders to explore how Ghana and other African nations can leverage their mineral resources for economic conversion and global relevance in the mining industry.
As Africa’s second-largest gold producer, ghana plays a significant role in shaping the continent’s mining sector. The summit will address policy reforms, responsible mining practices, and international cooperation within the Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) space. Discussions will center on adding value to raw minerals, promoting local beneficiation, and improving livelihoods for citizens involved in ASM operations.
Ghana’s Ministry of Mining noted the growing need to formalize ASM operations, introduce cleaner technologies, and ensure environmentally responsible practices. The summit aims to support miners with the tools for responsible success, rather than criminalizing them.
Digital technology and data-driven solutions will also be highlighted as tools to improve openness, traceability, and compliance in the mining sector. This includes using blockchain for mineral tracking, satellite monitoring, and mobile payment systems for ASM operators.
The event will feature panel discussions, investor forums, technical workshops, and community-focused exhibitions, providing a platform for Ghana’s mining communities to showcase local innovations and share experiences.
Speakers at the summit are expected to include Ghana’s Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, executives from the Chamber of Mines, representatives from the African Union, the world Bank, civil society groups, and investors from Canada, Australia, China, and South Africa.
“There is a growing need to formalize ASM operations, introduce cleaner technologies, and ensure miners operate in a way that protects the habitat and supports community development,” said an official from Ghana’s Ministry of Mining. “This summit will highlight how we can support miners, not criminalize them, and give them the tools to succeed responsibly.”
What’s next
the Mining in Motion 2025 Summit is expected to foster regional collaboration and deeper engagement between governments, the private sector, and communities, possibly shaping Africa’s mining future for decades as demand for critical minerals increases.
