Momoco’s Artistic Journey: From “Roshidere” to Innovative Perspectives
In November 2024, the spotlight shone brightly on Momoco, the acclaimed illustrator behind the beloved series “Roshidere: Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian.” Known for her delicate and expressive style, Momoco celebrated the release of her art book, arpeggio, with a solo exhibition that highlighted her contributions to light novels and anime.
The event marked a milestone in her career, showcasing her evolution as an artist and her growing influence in the industry. Momoco’s work on Roshidere, which gained widespread popularity both as a light novel and its summer 2024 anime adaptation by studio Doga Kobo, has cemented her reputation as a visionary in the field.
During a recent interview, Momoco opened up about her experience illustrating for Roshidere. She revealed that Alya Kujou, the series’ enigmatic protagonist, is her favorite character to draw. “I love working with characters who have bright hair because it makes lighting effects so much easier,” she shared. However, she admitted that male characters, particularly older ones, pose a unique challenge. “Capturing the right details for them can be tricky,” she said.
The anime adaptation of Roshidere marked a new chapter for Momoco, as she witnessed her artwork come to life on screen for the first time. “It was a constant discovery,” she reflected, noting how the animation team simplified and stylized certain elements of her original designs. Inspired by this experience, Momoco has since dedicated more time to experimenting with varied perspectives and angles in her illustrations.
In a genre often characterized by clear and straightforward compositions, Momoco has begun to push boundaries. “I’ve been trying out angles from above or below, and placing light in unexpected positions,” she explained. This innovative approach has brought a fresh dynamism to her work, delighting fans and adding depth to her storytelling.
Despite her busy schedule, Momoco maintains a balanced approach to her creative process. “I try not to obsess over details. If a section feels ‘good enough,’ I move on without hesitation,” she said. This philosophy allows her to stay productive while avoiding the pitfalls of perfectionism.
The first season of the Roshidere anime was praised for its faithful adaptation and vibrant animation, leading to the confirmation of a second season currently in production. Meanwhile, the light novel continues to captivate readers with its blend of humor and romance, particularly the dynamic between the sharp-witted Alya Kujou and the laid-back Masachika Kuze.
