Monsoon Warning: Heavy Rain Expected in Thailand

The Meteorological Department has issued Announcement No. 5, indicating that the monsoon season still lingers, and warns of heavy to very heavy rainfall across various areas in Thailand this August.

According to the department’s official statement released on August 13, there will be heavy to very heavy rain in certain parts of Thailand, along with strong wind waves in the Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand.

This weather phenomenon is caused by the prevailing intense south-west monsoon over the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand. Additionally, a weak monsoon trough can be found across the upper North, extending to upper Laos and a low-pressure cell in upper Vietnam.

In Announcement No. 4, it was already highlighted that heavy to very heavy rain was expected from August 13 to August 15. A 10-day advance rainfall forecast indicates that the north-eastern region of Thailand should expect heavy rain as well.

Thailand will experience more rainfall, with some areas in the central and southern parts of the east coast encountering heavy rain. The North, North East Coast, East, and South West regions will be hit by very heavy rain. Residents in these areas are urged to take precautions.

The risk of heavy to very heavy rain, along with accumulated rainfall, poses a threat of flash floods and landslides, especially in low-lying areas and foothills near water bodies. People should exercise caution while traveling through regions prone to thunderstorms.

The Meteorological Department has identified several states that are expected to face heavy to very heavy rain on specific days:

  • Northern region: Chiang Rai, Phayao, Nan, and Tak provinces
  • Northeast region: Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, Yasothon, Amnat Charoen, and Ubon Ratchathani
  • Eastern region: Nakhon Nayok, Prachinburi, Chanthaburi, and Trat
  • Southern region: Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat, Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang, and Satun

August 14, 2023

  • Northern region: Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phayao, Nan, Phrae, Lamphun, Lampang, Uttaradit, Tak, Phitsanulok, and Phetchabun

The upper Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand will experience significant wind waves, reaching heights of 2-3 meters. In areas prone to thunderstorms, the waves may exceed 3 meters. The lower Andaman Sea and the lower Gulf of Thailand will see waves reaching 1-2 meters, and more than 2 meters in thunderstorm areas.

Boaters are advised to exercise caution and avoid sailing in regions prone to thunderstorms. Small boats in the upper Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand should refrain from leaving the shore.
