Musk Blasts trump’s “abominable” Spending Bill, Cites Deficit Concerns
Updated June 3, 2025
Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk unleashed a torrent of criticism Tuesday against President Donald Trump’s tax-and-spending cut bill, labeling it a “disgusting abomination” poised to detonate the federal budget deficit. The tech mogul’s broadside came via a post on X, his social media platform.
“I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand it anymore,” Musk wrote, decrying the “massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill.” He directly addressed lawmakers who supported the bill, stating, “shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.”
Musk, who recently headed the Trump administration’s DOGE initiative aimed at curbing government waste, followed up with another post warning that the bill would “massively increase the already gigantic budget deficit to $2.5 trillion (!!!) and burden America citizens with crushingly unsustainable debt.”
The White House, however, dismissed Musk’s critique. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that President trump was aware of Musk’s stance and remains steadfast in his support of the bill, calling it “one big, lovely bill.” Leavitt also disputed claims that the bill would increase the deficit, accusing the Congressional Budget Office of bias after it projected a $3.8 trillion increase over the next decade.
House speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., defended the spending package, telling reporters that Musk was “terribly wrong.” Johnson also pledged to codify some of DOGE’s proposed spending cuts through a rescissions package.
Despite the White House’s defense, Musk found support among some Republicans. Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky.,echoed Musk’s concerns, responding to his X post with “He’s right.” Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, also warned of the deficit implications, stating that “Congress has hollowed out America’s middle class through reckless deficit spending.”
President Trump, earlier on Tuesday, rebuked Sen. rand Paul, R-Ky., for criticizing the bill’s debt ceiling increase. Trump insisted the bill would spur “tremendous GROWTH.” Paul later tweeted, “I agree with Elon. we have both seen the massive waste in government spending and we certainly know another $5 trillion in debt is a huge mistake.”
Musk, a major financial backer of Trump’s 2024 campaign, previously clashed with administration officials over trade and other policy matters during his tenure leading DOGE.
What’s next
The debate over the bill’s impact on the national debt and the role of government spending is expected to continue as Congress considers further legislative action.
