Elon Musk concludes Turbulent Tenure Leading DOGE

⁤ ⁤ Updated June 02, 2025

Elon Musk’s four-month leadership of the Department of⁣ Government Efficiency, or ⁢DOGE, concluded Friday, with President Donald Trump offering praise for the‌ Tesla CEO. Despite Trump’s support, Musk’s tenure was marked ⁤by ‍controversy and criticism over the department’s sweeping cuts to federal jobs and spending.

Trump lauded Musk on Truth Social, calling him “terrific” and emphasizing his continued support. However, Musk acknowledged a conflict ⁢between his support for Trump and his reservations about ‌the administration’s policies. He ⁤told CBS that he didn’t want to speak against the administration, but also didn’t want to take responsibility for everything it was doing.

The Department ⁣of Government Efficiency, ⁢DOGE, spearheaded by Musk, faced criticism for significant ‌job ⁢cuts within the ⁢federal ‍government.⁢ While Musk defended his record,he⁣ admitted that DOGE became a scapegoat‌ for any cuts, real or imagined. ⁢He ‌also⁢ voiced disappointment with the GOP’s multitrillion-dollar ⁢tax and spending package, arguing ⁣that it undermined DOGE’s work.

“I was disappointed to ‍see the massive spending bill, frankly,” Musk‌ said, adding that it “undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing.”

Despite Musk’s concerns about⁤ the spending bill, Trump officials plan to continue DOGE’s initiatives. Russell ‍Vought, director of the⁤ Office of Management and Budget, told CNN that the‌ administration would use “executive tools” to move forward with the cuts. Vought dismissed congressional criticism of DOGE’s reorganization efforts, asserting that watchdogs have been historically wrong.

DOGE’s ⁣actual savings have ‍fallen far short of‍ Musk’s initial projections of trillions of dollars in cuts. Moreover, Musk’s involvement in politics has negatively impacted his public ⁢image and Tesla’s reputation, with instances⁤ of‍ vandalism targeting ⁣Tesla vehicles and showrooms.

What’s‌ next

While Musk is stepping down from his formal role, the ⁣Trump‌ administration intends to continue pursuing the government efficiency initiatives started under his leadership at DOGE, using both congressional cooperation ‍and executive actions.
