Myanmar Military Recaptures Strategic Town
Myanmar Military Claims Capture of Key Town in Shan State Amidst Rebel Disagreement
Regime asserts control over Nawnghkio after protracted battle, but TNLA states withdrawal to “safe locations” amidst heavy offensive.
Myanmar’s military government has announced a notable claim of recapturing teh strategically vital town of Nawnghkio in Shan State, marking a rare perceived turnaround for the junta in the country’s ongoing civil conflict. The military declared on thursday that it had removed rebel fighters from the town, wich had been under the control of the Ta’ang National liberation Army (TNLA) for approximately a year.
The TNLA, a key component of the Three Brotherhood Alliance, had seized Nawnghkio in July 2024. The town’s importance is underscored by its location on a crucial highway that connects central Myanmar to China,a vital trade route for the nation. In a statement published in the state-run Global New Light of Myanmar, the military government detailed its advance, citing “566 armed engagements within 11 operational months.” The report included celebratory imagery of soldiers holding rifles aloft and acknowledged initial casualties among officers and enlisted men. Though, it asserted that through a combination of “strategic ground and air military tactics,” the military had successfully captured “the whole Nawnghkio area” by Wednesday.
Nawnghkio’s proximity to key military installations, situated approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) from Pyin Oo Lwin, the location of Myanmar’s primary military officer training academy, and about 80 kilometers (50 miles) from Mandalay, the country’s second-largest city, highlights its strategic meaning.
The Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) has not corroborated the military government’s victory claims. In its own statement, the rebel group indicated that “it has been difficult to continue administrative work in the town due to the heavy offensive.” The TNLA further stated that it had “moved civil governance services to safe locations,” implying a strategic withdrawal rather than a defeat.
While rebel offensives, especially those launched by the Three Brotherhood Alliance since October 2023, have inflicted considerable losses on government forces, analysts suggest the military government retains control over major population centers. This is largely attributed to the regime’s continued possession of an air force, which has proven effective in repelling large-scale rebel advances.
This development follows a pattern of shifting territorial control in the region. Northeastern Lashio city, also captured by rebel forces, was reportedly handed back to the ruling military in April following a diplomatic intervention brokered by China.
The current conflict escalated dramatically following the 2021 military coup that ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi. This event triggered a widespread civil war, uniting a diverse array of pro-democracy armed groups and ethnic rebel armies in their opposition to military rule. The Three Brotherhood Alliance, comprising the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army and the Arakan Army, has long pursued greater autonomy from Myanmar’s central government. This alliance also maintains a loose coalition with the People’s Defense Force, a prominent pro-democracy resistance movement that emerged in the wake of the coup.
