Myanmar General Election Likely to be Held in 2025 Due to Census Completion Delays

Senior members of the Union Unity and Development Party (USDP), supported by the Myanmar Army, have stated that the general election in Myanmar is expected to be held in 2025. This follows the completion of the 2024 census process, which is necessary to ensure accurate voter data. The ongoing situation in Myanmar also presents additional challenges, making it impossible to hold elections in the upcoming year.

In line with this, a member of a junta-approved political party has suggested the possibility of early 2025 for the elections.

Khin Yee, the president of the USDP party, affirmed that preparations for the future elections are underway. Despite facing threats, the party remains determined to push forward.

The Myanmar Election Commission, on the other hand, has allowed a total of 36 political parties to participate in the upcoming elections. However, no specific timetable for the elections has been provided. Among the approved parties, seven will be contesting at the national level, while the remaining 29 will participate at the local election level.

The Electoral Commission also declared the abolition of the maximum vote constituencies system, which had previously benefited the National League for Democracy (NLD) party led by former civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi. The NLD secured a landslide victory in the last election. The ECT has decided to adopt a proportional electoral system for national elections as a replacement.

In March, the NLD party, known as the main rival to parties supported by the Myanmar Army, was disbanded by the Electoral Commission. This was due to the NLD’s inability to register as a party under the new rules set by the authorities.

Major General Min Aung Hlaing, leader of Myanmar’s military junta, has emphasized the necessity of completing the 2024 census preparations. Only after its completion can the country proceed with the general elections, as reported by the Global New Light of Myanmar on September 2.
