An unearthed NASA photograph captured by the Curiosity rover has sparked fresh online debate about life on Mars, showcasing a distant, jellyfish-shaped object that vanished less than a minute later, according to reports from Metro.co.uk and the Daily Mail.
The Curiosity rover snapped the panoramic image on August 20, 2023, at approximately 6:27 pm ET while investigating Gale Crater, according to reporting by the Daily Mail. The photo displays a dusty Martian landscape featuring rocky hills and large mountains, alongside a small, dark figure in the left corner possessing a large body perched atop two spindly legs.
Speculation intensified after space enthusiast Kari Sivertzen reposted the 2023 image on X, noting that the object was absent in photographs taken less than a minute earlier, as reported by the Daily Mail. Independent Mars researcher Jean Ward posted on X, describing the anomaly as a jellyfish-shaped UFO or Unidentified Anomalous Phenomenon interacting with the surface and resembling a tripod-like object.
Evaluating the Martian Anomaly and Skeptical Theories
Viewers across social media platforms offered various interpretations of the distant object, comparing it to science fiction walkers or a structured relic from a past Martian civilization, according to the Daily Mail. Skeptics countered these theories by suggesting the dark figure represents nothing more than corrupted pixels or a camera artifact, which space officials refer to as an ‘artifact.’
Other commentators theorized the object was a human-made craft, specifically pointing to the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter, which completed its first powered and remotely controlled flight on another planet in 2021. However, the Daily Mail notes that this claim was quickly debunked because Ingenuity was located more than 2,000 miles away in a completely different Martian crater at the time of the photograph.
Curiosity Rover Mission Context in Gale Crater
The Curiosity rover has been exploring Gale Crater since 2012, examining rock layers and clay deposits to determine whether the planet could have historically supported microbial life. The impact crater, which spans a geographic area roughly comparable to the combined size of Connecticut and Rhode Island, features a towering mountain rising from its center.
While NASA announced in September 2025 that the Perseverance rover had discovered the clearest signs of ancient microbial life in a collected sample, space agency officials and the White House maintain that no signs of intelligent life have ever been found on Mars. Because the photograph in question was the final image posted on NASA’s website for that day, with the next camera feed arriving nearly two hours later facing an entirely different direction, officials have not confirmed whether the object continued moving or simply faded from view.
