Four commercial partners tapped to bolster Near Space Network, enabling enterprising missions from lunar exploration to climate studies.

(Greenbelt, MD) – NASA is gearing up for a new era of space exploration, and reliable communication is key.The agency has awarded contracts totaling $4.82 billion to four companies to significantly expand its Near Space network, a critical system that relays data from spacecraft back to earth. Intuitive Machines previously received a task order for relay services in cislunar space.

Kongsberg Satellite Services (Tromsø, Norway): Awarded two task orders to support science missions in low Earth orbit and NASA’s Lunar Exploration Ground Segment, providing additional capacity to alleviate demand on the Deep Space Network.

SSC Space U.S. Inc. (Horsham, Pennsylvania): Awarded two task orders to support science missions in low Earth orbit and missions in highly elliptical orbits.

Viasat, Inc.(Duluth, Georgia): Awarded a task order to support science missions in low Earth orbit.
